Besides resembling a puzzle, their design is not just the putting together of pieces but is an intellectual challenge that affects furniture’s appearance and functionality – this prompts us to look at our daily surroundings with new eyes, keen attention and imagination.

The present exhibition centres on this characteristic. Each module of their furniture can be seen as a separate work while the process of their being put together into a chair or a table is already a concept, a reflection and art of the purest kind, which makes the audience become involved as well.

The two authors have different backgrounds. Konstantin Achkov is a sculptor, Petar Zaharinov is an architect. In their case this gives them the advantage of being able to see a much stronger potential for creation in function and materials.

The seemingly simple shape becomes part of an amazing combination which, through the author’s idea, forms a completely functioning object. This is the most convincing proof possible that there is Bulgarian product design at top-world level. Konstantin Achkov takes part in the exhibition with several chairs: Android-system, Fangs, Frame, Ko-Ko, Stack, while Petar Zaharinov presents chairs and a table: 1×3, VIC и VST.

Konstantin Achkov is a graduate from the National Academy of Art in Sofia, where he studied sculpture at the atelier of Prof. Krum Damyanov. In 1996 he participated in the jubilee exhibition “100 Years National Academy of Art in Sofia”. Two years later he won an Open Society scholarship. Every year he presents his works at national and international shows and design forums. In 2009, together with the Tcherga group, he took part in the 100% Design show in London. In the same year he presented his works at the Smolyan July Jazz Fest and at the first Biennale of Bulgarian Design.

He has won the Second Prize for Product Design with the tensegrity furniture series X-tense (a table and a chair) and V-star (a table). He has won also the Special Prize of the Bulgarian Architects Union. At the end of the year, together with Tcherga, he took part in the World of Furniture show. In 2010, following a competition, he was invited to take part in Mikser, the open Balkan competition in Belgrade. In the same year he again presented his works at the World of Furniture. At the beginning of 2011 he organised an exhibition of his furniture products (Kolibri, Fangs, Android-system, the Trape lamps) during the Sofia Design Week. The Android chair was also presented at the Budapest Design Week. He presented his works at Vienna Design Week 2011 as part of the exposition “There Is or There Isn’t: Bulgarian Product Design Now”, organised at the Wittgenstein House. In 2011 he took part in the second Biennale of Bulgarian Design. His designs are regularly presented in Bulgarian and foreign media (including the leading design portals mocoloco.com, plusmood.com, medesignmag.com, contemporist.com, yatzer.com).

http://www.konstant-in.net/

Petar Zaharinov graduated in architecture from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Sofia. In 2006 he won a prize from the Jacob Chernikhov Foundation for his graduation work. In 2011 he won a Platinum A’design Award and was included in the Young Balkan Designers selection. In this connection his furniture products were displayed at the Salone Satellite, Milan 2011, on the stand of Young Balkan Designers, 2011.
