Exhibition “Memory and ritual from Sofia Sveta gora”

The exhibition at Credo Bonum Gallery presents distinctive rites and ritual associated with the celebration of spring religious holidays in the past and the present in the region of Sofia Sveta gora. The exhibition is part of the long-term project of Credo Bonum foundation for promotion and socialization the cultural heritage of Sofia Sveta gora and conducted in partnership whit the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies part of the Ethnographic Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IEFSEM-BAS).

The idea of the exhibition is to compare in one exposure life, traditions and rituals of the past, with the manner the rites and rituals that exist in Sofia and its surroundings today. The exhibition includes objects from the Ethnographic Museum – photographs, costumes, textiles, copper and pottery and other objects of Bulgarian’s everyday life of the early XX century. Another part of the exhibition is consisting of photographs and video documentation of the celebration of the holidays Lazarus, Palm Sunday, Easter and St. George this year near the Sofia quarters Kremikovci and Zhelyava. The rich documentary material is accompanied by texts describing how to celebrate these holidays in the past.

We hope this exhibition to present in an interesting and accessible way the rites and rituals in these places, and especially to show that although some changes and interpretations, the traditions are respected and practiced in our busy time.
