Credo Bonum and Goethe-Institut Bulgaria: May 23 – June 16, 2023

It’s hard to pinpoint where a crisis starts. Often a small error in the algorithm causes the whole system to crash. In recent years we have learned to live in a permanent crisis – political, social, environmental, crisis of the individual. It is as if we have reached the point where the message “Error” does not raise questions about the emergence of the problem, its depth and dominance, but rather we look for an “escape room”, a “shortcut” and even sometimes we stay in the comfort zone of the problem and learn to live with it as if it had always been part of us.

The exhibition “Error …message delivered” aims to trace and analyze how young artists deal with such an environment of permanent uncertainty and lack of sustainability in structures. What is it like to be a young artist searching for yourself in a time of transition that never seems to be complete? How does the incessant repetition of episodes of uncertainty and lack of grounding lead to creative rethinking of patterns? Can we begin a process of “unlearning” these patterns that have accumulated over time? What might be the new horizons of rethinking and getting rid of the superfluous?

This is what excites us today as curators of „Art Start“ this edition. What are the new strategies in the search for material expression, what are the themes that inspire young artists? How does the choice of theme and means of expression become a ritual for young artists? What are the new patterns they want to establish in order to achieve a narrative breakdown by now? “Error …message delivered” is an empirically attempted exploration of the theme of timeless repetition and the attempt to interrupt it, and what would come next?
